Gerhard Veldsman

BEng (Mech), MEng (Mech)

Chief Executive Officer

Gerhard is just the second person to hold the Chief Executive Officer role at Roy Hill, succeeding Barry Fitzgerald on 1 July 2021. Gerhard initially joined Roy Hill as Chief Operating Officer in August 2019.

Gerhard has extensive mining industry experience spanning various commodities and operations in Australia and South Africa, including more than a decade in iron ore. Gerhard has managed mine, port, and rail operations in the Pilbara, overseen major capital projects, and led organisation wide strategic planning and implementation.

He previously held senior management positions at Fortescue Metals Group, BHP, and BIS Industries.

Anthony Kirke

BEng (Mech)

Chief Operating Officer

Anthony joined Roy Hill in March 2020 as Director of the company’s industry leading interoperable autonomous haulage project and commenced as Chief Operating Officer on 1 July 2021.

With experience in both Australia and South America, Anthony has held a range of senior reliability, planning and operational roles, including responsibility for the successful start-up of a multi-billion dollar greenfield Pilbara iron ore mine. Anthony also has a strong people focus incorporating building front-line capability and leadership.

He has previously worked with fellow major iron ore producers Rio Tinto, BHP, and Fortescue Metals Group.

Greg Hawkins


Chief Financial Officer

Greg joined Roy Hill in August 2016 and has over 30 years of financial and operational experience in the resources sector in Australia, United Kingdom, Papua New Guinea and Eastern Africa. 

Previously, Greg was the Executive Director, Finance for Emeco Group and prior to that was President and CEO of African Barrick Gold plc., listed on the main board of the London Stock Exchange. Greg has also held senior management positions with Barrick Gold Corporation.

Giles Lenz

BBus (HR) Grad Dip (HRM)

General Manager People, Health & Safety

Giles joined Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd in October 2014 with over 25 years’ experience in Human Resources across different industries including mining, financial services and pharmaceuticals in both the UK and Australia. 

Giles has experience in operational readiness, major organisational transformation, organisational effectiveness and organisational development across these industries.

Giles has previously held senior management positions at Rio Tinto and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.

Chris Eriksen

BA Arts, Grad Dip (Information Science)

General Manager Innovation and Technology

Chris has over 25 years’ experience in technology and improvement across a range of sectors including mining, finance, and electricity. With a focus on strategic development, project implementation, and leading teams and supplier operations of all sizes, Chris has a proven record of delivering measurable results that prioritise people development, long-term safety, and productivity improvements.

Chris is leading key enabling projects for Roy Hill’s vision, including operational improvement initiatives and autonomous haulage, and is committed to ensuring the automation journey is inclusive and transparent for all employees.

Dean White

BEng (Mining), Grad Dip (Business), Unrestricted Quarry Manager Ticket

General Manager | Technical Services

Dean joined Roy Hill in March 2017 and has 33 years’ experience in the resource sector working across coal, gold, nickel and iron ore within several blue-chip companies. 

In addition to extensive operational experience, Dean has managed large-scale integrated operating centres and earth science teams. 

Prior to Roy Hill, Dean has held senior management positions with BHP and Newcrest. 

Paul Laybourne

CEng Dip, MSc (Project Management)

Project Director and General Manager Engineering Services

Paul joined the Roy Hill Project in November 2013 and was appointed Project Director for Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd in 2016 with the role extended to include General Manager Engineering Services in 2019.

Prior to joining Roy Hill, Paul held several national and international Director roles in various construction and project management companies including WSP and Turner and Townsend.

Paul has over 30 years’ major project and program delivery experience across the UK, Europe and Australia, spanning a number of sectors including natural resources, infrastructure and power.
